Reflections on The Music Instinct
I just watched The Music Instinct: Science & Song, a PBS documentary on how and why music effects humans. It covered a wide array of topics involving several areas of science, and I found it quite interesting overall, but a few key topics stuck out to me.
First, Brian Greene, string theory physicist (who you might remember from the Nova special on that subject), mentioned that, in string...

Support Yr Local Garage Rock Radio
Tonight is the night for Blank Generation. And hey, guess what? It’s WMUA Fund Drive Week! So, while you’re listening to some awesome shit (which you’ll hear nowhere else, by the way, but WMUA), from Supercharger, Yusef Lateef & Adam Rudolph, Duchess Says, and Billy Childish, and fantastic new cuts from Grooms, Cloak/Dagger, & The Almighty Defenders (who, by the way,...

Check out the nasty solo on that organ. GO PENTATONIC SCALE! ONLY BLACK KEYS!!!

Blank Generation Guest Hosted Tonight By Miss...
I’ll be in New York tonight, but Blank Generation of course continues, and with a special guest host! Miss Erika Elizabeth from Expressway to Yr Skull will be taking control of the board from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. while I’m at CMJ rocking my ass off all across Manhattan and Brooklyn. She usually has a theme prepared, and I’ve heard she may be playing all seven inch vinyl...

WMUA Fall Dance Concert Tomorrow
As DJ Dubble Dad has become notorious for saying, WMUA - the best alternative radio station in the Pioneer Valley - “has some good news fuh ya bootay!” DJ Dubble Dad, Eric Hnatow, & Providence, RI’s San Serac are droppin’ some sweet electronic and dance sounds tomorrow night at 8:00 in the UMass Student Union.
More information at WMUA, and perhaps an after-action...

I've been spotted on an internet!!!
Getting pretty amped about going to CMJ next week. Expect reports in this space from (hopefully) every show I attend. I’m gonna try and be a good journalist and take notes, but who knows how long that’s going to last, because I assume I am going to get pretty excellently drunk.
So, as far as I’m concerned, the show to beat from last year’s CMJ happened at Death By Audio,...
Blank Generation Playlist 10/13/09
Pretty decent show last night. Got a request for some Blue Cheer in memory of Dickie Peterson, who died on Monday. Of course, I immediately obliged.
Tune in next week; Erika’s guest hosting for me while I’m in New York for CMJ!
denotes a new release.

Blank Generation R'turns
You know the drill; I’m on the radio tonight, from 8:00 to 10:00, WMUA Rock Programming. Check it out at 91.1fm in the Amherst area, or tune in online at WMUA.org. New stuff from Gary War, BLK JKS, A Place to Bury Strangers, the Almighty Defenders, Polvo, and several more, I assure you. And some older cuts from Billy Childish & his Chatham Singers, King Khan & the Shrines, and...

Yusef Lateef/Adam Rudolph Duo This Thursday →
The next Solos & Duos show is this Thursday. Reed-player Yusef Lateef and hand drummer Adam Rudolph. I imagine this one will be a bit more accessible than the previous one, but it should be interesting just the same.
Perhaps I’ll see you there.

Well, that’s pretty much everything I know about that. But I’m excited; this is what someone should get me for Christmas or my birthday.

Awesome Shit Round-up 10/8/09
A lot of awesome shit has come out (or rather, appeared in the new music section of the WMUA music library) in the past couple of weeks, and, rather than let you forget any of it, I figured I’d drop some knowledge on you right now, because you need this.
So, here’s a list of awesome records from the past few weeks, with exceptional shit in italics:
The Almighty Defenders - The...
New song by The Soft Pack! →
Just posted to their MySpace - it’s called “Answer to Yourself.” These guys were one of the highlights of CMJ 2008, and the new song is rad. I can’t wait for another album.

Blank Generation Playlist 10/6/09
Pretty rockin’ show. Had a request from Erika (from whom I’ve stolen so many playlist elements and ideas) for some Dirty Three, which I happily obliged. Also had some callers who liked Jackie & the Cedrics and Nina Hagen enough to call about them, so that was neat too.
When you see this “” you know it’s a new release. So then you should get educated, because...
CMJ Final Lineup! / CMJ Scheduler! →
Final CMJ lineup announced! Here’s what I’m already way excited about:
Boogie Boarder
Duchess Says
Japandroids
Malajube
The Pack A.D.
Pissed Jeans
Screaming Females
The Selmanaires
Surf City
The Trashmen
They’ve got a scheduler up there too, which is pretty useful. I’m SO FUCKIN’ AMPED!
Oh yeah, Blank Generation tonight...
I forgot to mention that I’m doing a show tonight. I actually prepared ahead of time, which led me to forget about it this morning. Crazy.
That means tonight’s show is gonna be nasty; I actually thought about it in advance! Tonight, you might hear something from the Residents, Thee Oh Sees, Jackie and the Cedrics, Dennis Coffee, and hmm … maybe the Seeds? As far as new stuff...
Adam Carolla Back in with CBS →
Adam Carolla’s back in business with CBS radio, more or less the same guys that fired him back in February. This is potentially big news. They’ll be “co-producing” the podcast with him now, and, hopefully, that means better sound quality, and a direct phone line for listener calls or long distance interviews. And while Carolla’s not concerned about limits on what...

One Sentence Review: Shaky Hands
Hurrrr, these guys sound like Kings of Leon and their new album is derivative … of garbage.

Check this out!
To catch you up if you’ve fallen behind on what’s awesome, that’s the Soft Pack, formerly known as the Muslims (shouldn’ta changed it, if you ask me). Saw them for the first time at CMJ last year. They opened for Dungen, and fuckin’ rocked the place. Never seen Swedish jazz-rock fans get so rowdy. Highly recommended.

I miss videos like this…
More people should be into Nina Hagen. Classically trained, opera prodigy, truly a pioneer; she blended so many different styles, and she was never afraid to be completely batshit. It boggles the mind how much of this truly subversive punk stuff she was able to do despite the fact that she was living in East Berlin. And I don’t understand how she got signed...
