…Hates Music

FULL DISCLOSURE: I went to high school with the man behind Aphleck, and I consider him my friend, despite the fact that I forgot to talk to him for like, three years (because I’m a shitty friend; for that matter, I am also a shitty correspondent, so if I don’t get back for you for a few weeks, please do me the courtesy of considering that polite, even though by average standards, it’s really rude). So, while you may consider me biased, please also note that one time I told Louie I didn’t like the bass part he recorded for a previous song. So, I understand that, in this review, my objectivity is compromised, but I would also like you to keep in mind that there is no such thing as an objective review to begin with. In conclusion: nazi punks fuck off.
Aphleck’s a dude operating out of my (lame) hometown of New City, New York, and he’s just finished a full-length (and an EP…). …Hates Music blends together the accessible complexities of your favorite math-rock band with the power-/pop-punk sensibilities of your favorite “guilty-pleasure” music, mixing in occasional progressive rock sounds just to keep things interesting. Granted, some of the harmonies sound a little off, but only enough that it feels like punk rock.
“Boy, You’re On Your Own” kicks yr nuts in with chord structure and drum fills reminiscent of sBACH, another band you don’t know about (and because of that fact, you are a dick). Of course, what math-rock record would be complete without the guitarist playing above the bridge, as you’ll hear on the fantasticaly titled “Majora’s Mask?” I thought my favorite cut would be “Undress,” because of the way it blends noise and sparsity, creating the “free-est” on the album, but then I got to “Room to Spread” and its rhythmic complexities, and got all excited and stuff. Check that one out at the top of this page, and you’ll agree that it fuckin’ rocks.
