[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - 103
Higher Than the Stars (Slumberland)

The new Pains of Being Pure at Heart EP is pretty okay. Fuzzy, shoegazy stuff, but I wish they’d stick to that. I suppose I had this problem with their debut record as well; the sunshine pop stuff is a bit too sweet.
I get the feeling hipsters are supposed to be real into this group, and they’ve got some good tracks, but when I’m listening to the “Higher Than the Stars (Saint Etienne Visits Lord Spank Remix),” I wonder how much mileage there is in this stuff. Don’t get me wrong, there are some good cuts on this EP, like the pre-remix of that song, and “103,” found at the top of this piece, but … I have a hard time finding that much to appreciate in this “Balearic dub-disco remix.” Maybe I’m just not a big fan of Balearic dub-disco remixes. I don’t know if the problem is that they’re boring as shit, or … I guess that is the problem.
There are three good tracks on this disc, out of five. So, I suppose that’s a 60 out of 100.
