Adam Carolla’s back in business with CBS radio, more or less the same guys that fired him back in February. This is potentially big news. They’ll be “co-producing” the podcast with him now, and, hopefully, that means better sound quality, and a direct phone line for listener calls or long distance interviews. And while Carolla’s not concerned about limits on what he can or can’t say, (and, in all honesty, I don’t think we should be either), I will miss his discussions about fake jizz.
So, part of the deal means we’ll see more ads on the show too. I’m hoping he’ll continue on the (sort of) live-copy that he’s been utilizing. I guess some people feel like it’s disingenuous to do a live ad; I’ve heard people say it’s unethical, and that it blurs the line between advertising and entertainment, but, if given the choice between a prepackaged ad that I’ll just ignore or having someone funny just goof around while talking about the product, I think I like the latter better. It’s something I would actually listen to, and hopefully enjoy, as opposed to something I will skip. And, frankly, if you feel as though you’ll somehow be tricked by these ads, you’re probably an intellectual weakling. While I think we would all prefer an ad-free product, I’m just not sure it would be viable for this type of show.
This could be very important for the future of podcasting. If Carolla can make some real money on this, it could open the door for a lot more serious investment in the medium. On the other hand, if this doesn’t work, it could scare a lot of people away from it. I’m hoping this opens some doors. It would be nice to see an increased interest in this format; the potential is limitless.
