The Golden Hour Box Set (1928 Recordings)

Just got this new 1928 Recordings sampler, “The Golden Hour Box Set.” It’s a collection of three 7-inches, from three bands: Tijuana Panthers, Air Waves, and Gray Goods, plus a bonus download from each group. The quick rundown is this: they all fall in the “California garage-reverb” style that I just made up, despite the fact that only Tijuana Panthers are from California, and Air Waves and Gray Goods are both repping Brooklyn.
Tijuana Panthers are pretty rockin’, with some surf touches, the standout track being “Red Headed Girl,” although, come to think of it, if it were up to me, I would’ve put the bonus track, “Don’t Shoot Your Guns,” on the 7-inch, because it’s a bit more awesome than “Crew Cut.”
Air Waves seem to have a softer touch, a bit dreamier, while still rocking pretty hard, specifically on the song “Sweetness.” That one’s my favorite of theirs, but “Knockout” also does some good work.
Gray Goods are my favorite of the three. They remind me of fellow 1928 Recordings rockers The Soft Pack, which is, I think, a good thing. ”Closet Trash” and “Weak Link” are awesome, and I highly recommend checking them out (see the former at the top of this article).
