The Black Keys, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, & Ludacris - Coochie
Blakroc (
Blakroc)

Every once in a while, I find some hip hop that I really enjoy, and I feel like I should shut up about it, because I don’t think I really know enough about it to speak competently on it.  Also, all the indie music blogs are doing their best of the year/decade lists, and it’s the lamest thing ever when all they do all the time is talk about all these indie rock records they actually like, and then they give the number one spot to some hip hop record they otherwise never talk about.  It just seems like they’re trying to be like “no, we’re down, we listen to hip hop, see? We put Jay-Z at number one!”  Fuck off.  It’s disingenuous.  If you like hip hop, talk about hip hop.  But if you love hip hop so much, why are you doing an indie rock blog?

Anyway, I don’t claim to be any authority on hip hop, and definitely not on all of music, and I’ll never do a “best-of” list in either category.  Now, that being said, I will now actually get to the song on this post.  The Black Keys new record is a pretty good collaboration with a bunch of hip-hopping rappers.  Most of it is alright, and some of it I really enjoy, but, as I said, I don’t have the knowledge-base in the style to really be able to confidently explain why.  All I can say is I really like Ludacris.  And, when I think about it objectively, I really think I shouldn’t.  He’s a completely mainstream artist, which I usually avoid, and, I don’t think he really even has any cred.  Like, I’ve never heard people say something like “Yeah, he’s mainstream, but Ludacris is still a really amazing artist.”  I think because he’s usually starring in Fast and Furious movies and pronouncing “dick” incorrectly.

But I can’t help but really enjoy every Ludacris song I ever hear.  Can someone explain this to me?  Seriously, I’m asking for a basic aesthetics of hip hop, with regards to Ludacris, right now.

The Black Keys and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, however, I get.

Agreed. Although...my broad taste (or lack of…) gives me free reign
