Cloud Becomes Your Hand (Canada Goose Tapes)

In his latest project, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, Bushwick-resident Stephen Cooper has created a blend of excited acoustic strummings and hi-tech (but low-tech) sounds that ends up creating some really interesting textures that really cover a lot of ground. Organic and synthetic sounds work together in a truly weird fashion on these songs, such that a really unique mind will really enjoy it, (but norms might not really have that much to hold on to [but then again, fuck norms]).
You can give a listen to “Rootabaga” at the top of this page, and after you have, grab the cassette from a fresh operation: Canada Goose Tapes. On there, you’ll find such mind-melters as “Piss on the Mouth of Hell,” current holder of the “Best Song-Title Ever” award that could pass for a long-lost Old time Relijun song and “Horse Meat,” another favorite of mine that could pass for a long-lost Super Mario World soundtrack piece.
On a related note, I am considering starting a label that only puts out novelty comedy tapes called Cassette Duck.

Naga Suara (Slanty Shanty)

Well, if you’ve not heard Old Tim Relijun member Arrington de Dionyso’s previous solo recording, you need to get on it, because that album of Indonesian-punk-improv was phenomenal. He’s got a cassette out on Slanty Shanty Records Tape Club, and I’m pretty excited about it. Here’s a piece from it, a fuzzy recording of drums and some kinda wind instrument that carries the same “strangling a duck” feel that was found so frequently on Malaikat Dan Singa, and it’s still neato.
They’re only making a hundred of these tapes, I believe. Seems like a pretty cool thing to have…

Angelo Spencer Et Les Hauts Sommets (K)

From what I understand, Angelo Spencer is a guitarist who spends much of his time making surf-rock with some experimental and ethnic influences. Angelo Spencer Et Les Hauts Sommets employs elements similar to those found in Arrington De Dionyso’s latest record, Malaikat dan Singa, which makes sense, since Dionyso was a musician on this album. I think my favorite tracks are those which feature that influence most prominently, like “Did You Hear the Sound Of…” and “Le Mont Pourri.” The album seems to be at its best when it’s at its noisiest. There are times when it’s focusing more on surf-rock, and those seem to be the less interesting parts. But when the focus is on noise, like the previously mentioned cuts, or “Shivers,” a particularly fuzzy guitar track, then things get a lot more fun.
I have to say that I’m not sure if I like Angelo Spencer or just really like Malaikat dan Singa. But either way, I’m interested to hear more.
P.S. Angelo Summers and High Summits.
